Patient story

I was told all this, as I do not remember

Woman, 60s  ·  Middle East
What happened?

I was told all this, as I do not remember. I was at home and apparently I could not eat or drink, and I lost a lot of weight. My family called an ambulance and I was rushed to A&E, then taken to critical care.

What was a moment of kindness from the ICU that you will never forget?

It was when I went back about a year later and was welcomed with open arms. They are all angels, and they saved my life.

What is something you found funny in the ICU?

I think I just kept laughing at a squirrel running around — but it was delirium, I think.

Did you experience anything strange or other-worldly in the ICU?

I saw lots of people walking around, and a nurse was trying to kill me — of course she was not, it was my delirium.

What part of your ICU experience do you wish you got to talk about more, but somehow never do?

Seeing a naked man in a big window in front of me kicking a football — he was not there, of course. And families in big glass boxes being treated and never being able to go home.

What part of your ICU experience do you not talk about often because you think it might scare people?

Drifting away and feeling very relaxed and not scared of it at all.

What is a story or observation from the ICU that you have never told anyone?

There was a robot that kept coming into my room — it terrified me. But about a year later when I went back, a nurse showed me this robot-like figure. It had been coming in with food. It even had a man's name, but I can't remember it now.

How did your experience in the ICU change you?

I still do not sleep at night — I only get about two hours if I'm lucky, as I'm scared to sleep in case it all happens again. It is such a terrible thing to go through. I had pneumonia and sepsis. It is always on my mind and I do not have much peace from it all. But I'm here, so thank you ICU for saving my life.
